Community Development

Goal

Enabling people to become self reliant in all aspects of their lives.

Objective

Encourage and enable poor communities to participate in their development through:

1. Non-formal education.

2. Community organization and micro enterprise development.

3. Improved health and environmental protection.

Agriculture and Environment

We have conducted 37 workshops on Agriculture and Environmental aspects. 1300 people got awareness on several aspects related with agriculture and environment. In these we taught on different kinds of pollutions and what the effects are and how to avoid them; provided seedlings and fruit bearing plants to the 74 villagers; provided grants for soak pits.

Results

Improved environmental conditions in 632 families in 74 villages. Farmers are using bio-fertilizers; increased the usage of alternative plastics; availing clean water facility; making use of waste water for kitchen gardens; formers planting internal crops, making soil testing, using natural manure, quality seeds, vermi-compost; controlling sound pollution in the villages, Ground water level has increased; improved physical well being and increased family income by selling food supplements.

Education

We have conducted 74 Adult literacy centres in 74 villages from 2002 to 2012 and attended a total of 2,345. 1138 were passed in the examinations; 372 women, 57 men were functionally literates. So they can able to do their activities.

Results

Conducted 71 workshops for 1650 Sangham Leaders 28 workshops for 74 Animators. We taught on role and responsibilities of Leaders, qualities of leaders, importance of unity, leadership skills, literacy, regular savings, book keeping, Govt. schemes, and relationships with govt. officials and political leaders, income generation programs, women’s rights, financial resources, resources utilization in proper way, family planning, utilization of govt. sources; Social equality; Consumer rights.

1095 Sangham Leaders improved their qualities and equipped with skills in taking responsibilities in their Sanghams. Started 964 individuals from 68 villages started small business units. 27 Sanghams started 29 Group income generation units. They produce consumer goods like detergent powder, brooms and clothes business, palm leaves, lime line, candles, and palm coir as group activities. They are maintaining rapport with the Govt. people and started the income generation programmes. 128 Self Help Groups got loan from the Govt. 73 Sangham members are implementing safe environmental methods. 35 members identified their local resources and started utilizing them

Animators are able to do equip their Sanghams’ programmes like to encourage sanitation activities, savings, income generation programmes, equip the Sangham members in human dignity and build relations with in the Sangham members and out of the Sangham members, present reports, conduct Sangham meetings and literacy programmes effectively. They are able to guide the Sangham members in the functioning of the Sanghams and to develop the capacity building of Sanghams .

Peoples Organization

Samatha formed 74 women Sanghams with the membership of 1600, 37 men Sanghams with the membership of 550 and 35 youth Sanghams with the membership of 500 in 74 villages of Payakaraopeta, Nakkapalli and S. Rayavaram Mandals of Visakhapatnam District.

Results

310 women, 93 men and 112 youth Sangham Leaders improved their qualities and equipped with skills in taking responsibilities in their Sanghams like conduct regular Sangham meetings, maintain unity between Sangham members, having regular savings and depositing in the banks and giving loans to the Sangham members. Maintain the rapport with the Govt. people and started the income generation programmes. Improving environmental conditions in the villages like using alternative plastics, natural manure, decrease pollutions, plantation of plants, increase afforestation, etc. Men Sangham participated in Sramadanam programs. 73 Sangham members are implementing safe environmental methods. 35 members identified their local resources and started utilizing them. Started 964 individuals from 38 villages started small business units.

Peoples Health

Samatha has conducted 99 Health awareness programmes in 74 villages and the topics were on Immunization, HIV/AIDS and Seasonal diseases, Personal Hygiene, Sanitation, Anemia, Child Marriages, Environment, Chicken pox, Small pox, Rearing the children, T.B., Diarrhoea, Chiquon gunya, Malaria, Filariasis, 7 killer diseases, Family planning, Food habits, Antenatal care and Postnatal care. 3229 women and 1636 men a total of 4865 participants have attended.

We have conducted 18 Mandal wise’ Awareness programmes on HIV/AIDS. To these awareness programs 888 women and 496 youth have attended. We taught about ‘What is HIV/AIDS’, ‘Symptoms of HIV/AIDS’, ‘how could we protect from this disease’, ‘how we could counsel to affected people’ through group discussions. We also arranged get together with former beneficiaries for sharing. We also conducted rallies on HIV/AIDS.

We have conducted 3 Mandal wise Training programmes i.e. Payakaraopeta and Nakkapalli as networking with Govt. Also conducted two rallies on HIV/AIDS with our Sangham people and local all schools staff and children about 1,600 children in Payakaraopeta town

Results

2394 women and 1106 men a total of 3500 about 87% of participants have reported in their improvement in general health i.e. cleanliness of the surroundings, personal hygiene, care of antenatal and postnatal, adoption of family planning, regular immunization and rearing of the children. 1859 mothers, 1440 female and 1237 male children were fully immunized. Because of the immunization decrease the infant mortality, increase healthy babies and mothers. All the participants got awareness on HIV/ AIDS and 320 participants have teaching others in their own village and neighborhood about the dangerous of HIV/AIDS and they shared to go their families with them whenever they migrate for their works. And they are taking precautions in their day to day health aspect programmes.

Infrastructure

In the beginning, infrastructure facilities are very low in the communities where we have started work. There had no proper transportation, roads, drinking water, internal roads, drainage system, electrification and proper educational facilities, etc. We gave awareness to the communities on importance of above facilities and how to get them from Govt agencies. In the initial stage we contributed some amount and people gave their free labor. Later days the communities also met Govt officials and got the needed resources to their communities.
