Child Labour Rehabilitation

Goal

To strive to eradicate Child Labor in the Payakaraopeta area and assist child laborers to build a positive future through education, health care and training.

Objectives

To Rescue and rehabilitate the children employed in labor in Payakaraopeta area by:

1. Increasing community awareness of child labor problem.

2. Providing education and training for the children (previous laborers).

3. Providing counseling for parents of child laborers.

Awareness

From 2002 to 2012 we conducted 80 awareness programs in 74 of our targeted villages through the testimonies of formerly child laborers, puppet shows, action songs and talks on this issue on harm of Child Labor. To these programs 3,749 children and 2,820 parents were attended and they were educated on the problem of Child Labor. We identified 368 Child laborer's in all 80 awareness programs and motivated parents to admit in the schools.

Results

As a result of our awareness programmes 19 dropout students and 367 Child Labour parents were motivated to join in regular schools. Out of the 62 Child Labourers, 30 were joined in Child Labour Rehabilitation Programme. a. As a result of our awareness programmes, 5250 people (80%) understood the problem of child labour. b. 241 (66%) out of 367 Child Labour and their parents were motivated and the children joined regular schools.

General Education

Samatha brought the child laborers to the centre and gave the opportunity to enjoy the facilities. Meanwhile we taught them on importance of childhood and education. Then we make them in different classes as per their standards. We also gave stipend as compensation to concentrate on education. Some time they learnt about education and some time they learnt vocational things why because they won't concentrate on education continuously. We joined 363 children in Govt. educational institutions when they had showing more interest on education. Some of them are settled in different jobs after finished their studies.

Vocational Education

We gave awareness on importance of skill trainings and exposure on different trades. We gave training on which skill they are interested like sewing, handicrafts, electrical wiring, aari work, etc. Later days, all the children admitted in regular schools. Some of them are settled in different trades which they got training and some are started their own income generation programs.

Parental Counseling

We have conducted monthly parental counseling meeting to the parents and we taught on importance of eradication of child labour, rearing of children, children rights, parental model behaviours to the children, observation of their children’s behaviours, etc.

Results

They cooperate in running the school by participating in eradication of Child Labour as motivate other parents to send the Regular School or Child Labour Rehabilitation Program, realized their responsibilities to send their children to school regularly and sent to Govt. Schools. Because of the counseling the dropouts’ number in the Child Labor Rehabilitation Centre has come down to 10%.
